T Code System for ISO Tank Containers and Specifications

Many of the chemicals shipped globally are classified as dangerous goods and fall under relevant modal regulations. For example, the IMDG Code outlines portable tank instructions that specify requirements for tanks used to transport specific substances. While the Dangerous Goods List (DGL) defines the tank instructions needed for each substance being transported. Portable tank instructions, ranging from T1 to T22, specify minimum test pressure, shell thickness, pressure relief, and bottom opening requirements.

In general, tanks constructed to meet the T11 instructions are commonly used for general-purpose transportation. Portable tank instructions T1 to T22 are typically used for carrying dangerous liquids and solids classified from Class 1 to Class 9 (excluding Class 7), as well as non-hazardous bulk liquid cargoes. Some bulk solid cargoes are also transported in tanks.

Codes T23, T50, and T75 are more specialized and designed for specific types of cargo. The T23 instruction applies to self-reactive substances of Class 4.1 and organic peroxides of Class 5.2, with specific specifications for shell thickness, pressure relief, and bottom openings depending on the cargo type. T50 instructions are for the carriage of non-refrigerated liquefied gases and chemicals under pressure, while T75 instructions are for refrigerated liquefied gases and chemicals under pressure.

When a specific portable tank instruction is designated for dangerous cargo, tanks with higher minimum test pressures, thicker shells, and more stringent bottom openings and pressure relief arrangements may be used. The table below provides a guide to determine which tanks are suitable for different cargoes.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind About Intermodal Tank Type

  1. You shouldn’t use chemical-grade tank containers to transport food-grade cargo (even after thorough cleaning).
  2. Each tank container goes through thorough cleaning and inspection after the cargo is unloaded and before the next shipment.
  3. Every tank should be 80% full (to avoid surge) and less than 95% full (for thermal expansion).

It is essential for keeping the tank in good condition for its efficient operation. Containers used for international shipping must meet safety standards outlined in the Container Safety Convention (CSC). Failing to maintain the equipment properly can lead to inconvenient downtime, expensive repairs, and potential cargo loss. Establishing a preventative maintenance schedule is highly valuable.

Under the CSC, operators of Container Transport Units (CTUs) must create and follow a maintenance system that covers container inspections, examinations, and upkeep. This system should include maintaining the tank’s frame, and its connection to the pressure vessel, and preventing the loss of service items for portable tanks.

The 9 classes of Dangerous Goods

Materials or items with hazardous properties, known as “dangerous goods,” have the potential to pose risks to human health, safety, infrastructure, and transportation systems if not appropriately managed.

Regulatory frameworks include thorough classification systems that categorize these hazards into nine classes based on the specific type of danger presented.

Explosives
Flammable Gases
Flammable Liquids
Flammable solids
Oxidizing
Toxic & Infectious
Radioactive
Corrosives
Miscellaneous

Different Intermodal Tank Types

The International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG/IMO) classifies tank containers into IMO Type 1, IMO Type 2, and IMO Type 5.

IMO Type 1

Tank containers of IMO Type 1 are used for transporting dangerous materials like explosives, highly flammable toxins, and corrosive substances. These tanks are suitable for shipping liquids that can catch fire easily, with a flashpoint below 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit). In this type of tank, the discharge outlet can be found on both the top and bottom.

IMO Type 2

IMO Type 2 tanks are used for transporting less hazardous chemical liquids such as diesel, herbicides, insecticides, cooking oil, or alcoholic beverages. These liquids have a flashpoint ranging from 0 to below 61 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit to 142 degrees Fahrenheit). The discharge outlet is typically located at the bottom of the tank.

IMO Type 5

For transporting non-refrigerated flammable gases like propane and butane, tank containers known as gas tanks are used. These tanks, referred to as IMO Type 5, have a special mounting arrangement to suspend them within the container. This helps prevent movement or friction between the tank and the frame. Due to the highly dangerous nature of the materials they carry, Type 5 tanks come with specific operating instructions.

Note: In addition to the above three IMO tank types, there is also an IMO Type 7 tank container designed and approved for carrying cryogenic or refrigerated liquids like oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and so on.
