A shipping container door kit is a set of hardware and components used to replace, repair, or add doors to a shipping container. These kits are commonly used in container modifications, DIY container builds, and replacing damaged doors on older containers.
Full kits often come pre-welded on a steel frame that you can cut into the side or end of a container (especially retrofit kits). The doors themselves may or may not be included. Some kits assume you are fabricating or already have the steel door panels.

What’s Usually Included in a Shipping Container Door Kit
Door Hinges & Pins
Heavy-duty hinges allow the doors to swing open/closed while bearing the significant weight of the heavy steel doors.
Each container door typically has 2 to 4 heavy-duty hinges, vertically aligned on the edge of the door.
Then, there is also a solid steel rod or pin that slides vertically through the hinge barrels that acts as the pivot axis, allowing the door to rotate open and shut.
Locking Rods (Cam Rods)
The locking rods or cam rods secure the door closed and keep it tightly sealed against the container frame. Each shipping container door typically has two vertical locking rods, one on the left and one on the right.
These rods span from the top to the bottom of the door and are rotated by the door handle (lever handle or cam handle).
Cam Keepers / Lugs
Cam Keepers are stationary brackets on the container door frame. They play a critical role in securing the locking rods (cam rods) and ensuring the container door stays tightly shut and sealed.
Handles & Handle Catches
The handles and handle catches are critical parts of the locking system on a shipping container door. They allow you to manually operate the locking rods (cam rods) that secure the steel heavy door in place.
Just connect the handle to the locking rod. When turned, it rotates the cam rod, engaging or disengaging the top and bottom cams into the cam keepers.
Gaskets / Door Seals
The gaskets or door seals ensure the container remains weatherproof, dustproof, and pest-resistant. They run along the inside edge of each door and compress against the frame when closed, forming a tight seal.
Mounting Plates or Frames
People use mounting plates or frames to install, reinforce, or retrofit shipping container doors, especially in container modifications.
They serve as the foundation for attaching the door assembly to the container wall or end frame.
Lock Box
A lock box is a steel security feature welded to a shipping container door to protect the padlock that secures the door handles.
It has a design that can prevent unauthorized access, especially against bolt cutters, crowbars, and other common break-in tools.
Bolts, Nuts, Washers
In a shipping container door assembly, bolts, nuts, and washers are the essential fasteners to secure door hardware such as hinges, cam keepers, locking rods, and handles. These components ensure the structural integrity and functionality of the door.
Grease Fittings
Grease fittings are small metal fittings on the movable parts of a shipping container door for easy lubrication. Proper lubrication helps keep the heavy steel doors operating smoothly and prevents corrosion or seizing.
Types of Container Doors
In addition to the commonly seen container doors, there are several other types of container doors, each with a different design.
1. 3mm Steel Panels
This type of container door is lightweight and has a single locking blade. The advantage of this container door is its ease of use and its 3mm thickness. We recommend that you use this door type for storage containers.
2. Original Container Door
This type of door features a corrugated steel panel, an external rubber seal, and two locking bars. The advantage of this type of door is its security and protection against water ingress without additional modifications. This door is suitable for container use in construction areas.
3. Steel Panel Door
This type of door is lightweight with two locking arms and a compressed door seal. The advantage of this door is that it combines 3mm Steel Panels with the original container door. We recommend that you use this for storing goods that are easily damaged by moisture.
4. Roller Shutters Door
This type of door opens by lifting upwards, which makes loading and unloading activities faster and easier with a forklift. It is suitable for modified containers intended for commercial use.
5. Personnel Door
Personnel doors have a steel structure. They come with a locking system, rubber seals, and thermal insulation. You can use them on modified containers or portacamps for offices or shops.
