Not all used containers are eligible for a sea container. Based on the current conditions, there are 4 types of used containers that are available in the market. They are cargo-worthy containers, WWT containers, refurbished containers, and as-is containers. All these 4 containers come with different specifications.
However, the cargo-worthy and WWT come in better conditions, if you compare them with containers in refurbished or as-is conditions. But can both of them fulfill the sea container standard? Find the answer in this article!

What is a Cargo Worthy Container?
Cargo worthy (CW) refers to the condition of a used container that is still suitable for use in shipping cargo across borders or for importing and exporting. The cargo-worthiness status is important for a used container, as it defines safety, durability, and a more affordable container price.
A cargo-worthy container is safer than other used containers because they have undergone thorough inspections and obtained certification that is required for the shipping process. It is also proven to withstand extreme weather conditions and can be used for years. Therefore, it has a higher resale value compared to uncertified used containers.
Moreover, the price of a cargo-worthy container is more affordable than the new one, making it suitable for businesses with limited budgets. Later, if you want to resell, you can still get a good price if you maintain the container properly. This is popular in the secondary market.
There may be traces of chemical cargo or odors of the cargo-worthy containers that are difficult to remove. Also, the cargo-worthy container may have a previous pesticide treatment, as this is common in used containers.
What is WWT Container?
A Wind and Water Tight (WWT) shipping container is a practical and cost-effective solution, especially for non-perishable or dry goods that don’t require refrigeration. Made of a used shipping container that is no longer certified for international shipping, it is structurally sound, free from holes or leaks, and capable of keeping out wind, rain, dust, and pests.
These containers have passed a visual inspection but may not be certified for international shipping.
However, not every type of goods can be stored in this container, including perishable food. This is because they do not have insulation or a refrigerator system. You need to avoid using them for perishables, frozen items, and items that are sensitive to heat or humidity unless modified.
Which One is Compatible as a Sea Container?

As explained above, a WWT container by itself cannot be used to send goods overseas in international maritime shipping. Wind & Water Tight means the container keeps out wind and water and is suitable for storage because it has no major leaks or holes.
However, WWT is not a shipping certification and doesn’t guarantee the container’s structural strength for transport. It’s often used for land storage, workshops, or other non-shipping purposes.
To legally and safely ship goods overseas, the right container type to choose is the Cargo Worthy container. It is because the container is equipped with a valid CSC (Container Safety Convention) certificate that is compliant with ISO 1496/1 standards. For this, you should have your cargo-worthy container inspected by IICL (Institute of International Container Lessors) or a qualified surveyor.
This CSC plate contains information such as the Container Model, Manufacturer’s Name, Country of Approval and Approval Reference, Date Manufactured, Manufacturer’s Serial No., Container number, Maximum gross weight, Allowed Stacking Weight, and Racking Test.
Meanwhile, most WWT containers do not have a CSC plate, so ports and shipping lines will not accept them for cargo shipment.
To actually ship overseas, the container must also have acceptance by the shipping line
and proper documentation such as a bill of lading, packing list, customs paperwork, etc.
